Short answer: Moms use a fetal doppler at home to hear and share their baby's heartbeat between appointments, often from around week 10 to 12. It can be a lovely ritual. It is not a way to check on your baby's health, and it isn't the right fit for everyone.
When I designed the Nooliva kit, I wanted it to be about one simple thing: listening together. Here's how moms use a home doppler, and when it's better to leave it in the drawer.
5 reasons moms love it
1. Sharing the heartbeat
For many partners, hearing the heartbeat for the first time makes the pregnancy feel real. The built-in speaker lets the whole room listen.
2. Including family who live far away
A quick video call during a session lets grandparents hear it too. It's a sweet way to bring them into the moment.
3. A calm little ritual
A few quiet minutes, a bit of gel, slow circles. For many moms it becomes a weekly pause, like the bump photo or the evening walk.
4. Bonding for older siblings
Letting a big brother or sister listen helps them feel part of what's happening.
5. A keepsake
Some moms record the sound on their phone and keep it with their first ultrasound picture.
When to skip it
- If it doesn't feel good for you. Some moms find that not hearing the heartbeat right away is hard. That's a perfectly good reason to put it away.
- Before week 10. It's usually too early, even with a good device and plenty of gel.
- Never as a health check. Hearing a heartbeat doesn't tell you everything is fine, and not hearing it at home doesn't tell you anything either. If you're worried, call your provider instead of reaching for the doppler.
How to use it well
- Lie back and use plenty of gel, low on your belly, just above the pubic bone.
- Glide slowly in small circles, angled slightly down.
- Listen for a fast gallop, usually 120–160 BPM. A slower beat is probably yours.
- Keep sessions short. A few minutes is plenty.
